Weekend movie: Away from Her

June 8, 2007

Received from Katherine Pearson–Penn State

“Last weekend I saw “Away From Her” by first time director SarahPolley.  The movie is based on Alice Munroe’s great short story, “TheBear Came Over the Mountain,” and it is a gentle exploration of love, need, independence and aging.  While many people start off describingthe movie as being “about” Alzheimers and nursing homes, this is amovie that is about much more than those superficial details of aging.  Iplan to use a portion of the movie in my Elder Law class in the fall. The movie also serves as a way for any family to start a conversationabout “what do you want when….”    It is about life planning, and allthe inherent uncertainties of any life plan.  Here’s a professional review that captures well the essence of the movie for me: http://www.cinematical.com/2007/01/22/sundance-review-away-from-her/

And from me:  I’ve received many favorable comments on this movie, including from a close friend who has early Alzheimer’s who said it captures how she feels.  I haven’t seen it yet, but plan to soon.
