To extend or not to extend, that is the question

The Republican-led Senate, worried that seniors will punish GOPlawmakers at the polls for missteps in the new Medicare prescriptiondrug program, voted Wednesday to authorize the government to lengthenthe sign-up period for the benefit and to negotiate cut-rate priceswith drug companies.

The Senate action provided fresh evidencethat the prescription drug insurance program, which President Bush hasheld up as one of the leading achievements of his presidency, hadturned into a political liability.

The President, on the other hand, thinks seniors have had enough time to enroll–so fish or cut bait.
