Alberta long term care inquiry–follow up

July 1, 2005

In a follow up to a story posted earlier this week:

The Health Sciences Association of Alberta (HSAA/NUPGE) has condemned the process set up by the provincial MLA task force committee reviewing long-term care in Alberta.

The union, a component of the National Union of Public and General           Employees (NUPGE), represents more than 13,000 professional, technical, support and ambulance workers in Alberta’s health care system. It has denounced the process as being flawed.

“Here we have the committee co-chair giving the system an A plus           rating before the committee even begins its review,” says HSAA president Elisabeth Ballermann.

“It is difficult for Albertans to have faith in a process where meetings are held in private, where there is no time for concerned stakeholders to prepare submissions, and where priority is being given to hearing from operators instead of caregivers and residents,” she adds.
