Hearings on nursing home care in the US
A big, national spotlight will be on nursing home providers next Wednesday. The chairof the Senate Aging Committee is holding a hearing on the safety andquality of the nursing home industry 20 years after the implementationof the Nursing Home Reform Act, also known as OBRA ’87. Committee Chairman Herb Kohl (D-WI) will preside over the hearing, which willfeature testimony from prominent individuals from provider, government,advocacy groups, and other areas. The hearing comes just days after areport found that federal enforcement actions have failed to improvequality at some nursing homes.
Panelists will include: Mary Ousley, formerchair of the American Health Care Association; Kathryn Allen, directorof health care, U.S. Government Accountability Office; and Alice H.Hedt, executive director of the National Citizen’s Coalition forNursing Home Reform. The hearing will be held at 10:30 EST May 2 in theDirksen Senate Building.
