CMS fingers the worst nursing homes for bedsore and other appalling stuff

Last week the Centers for Medicare & MedicaidServices publicly identified over 4000 nursing homes – more than 25% offacilities nationwide – whose residents are physically restrained, orhave pressure sores, or both, in excessive numbers. This should be acall to action to both Congress and the Centers for Medicare &Medicaid Services.”What’sneeded to avoid pressure ulcers and physical restraints is a sufficientnumber of well-trained certified nurse assistants, accompanied andsupervised by a sufficient number of registered nurses,” said SeniorPolicy Attorney Toby S. Edelman with the Center for Medicare Advocacy. “WithCMS reporting that more than 90% of nursing homes do not havesufficient staff to meet residents’ needs, it is time for Congress toenact legislation mandating comprehensive and meaningful nurse staffingratios,” continued Edelman. “For its part, CMSneeds to take stronger enforcement action whenever it finds facilitiesshort-changing their residents and providing them with less care thanthey need.”
