Abstract:
This book will discuss the interplay of norms and families from anumber of perspectives. It will tie theoretical and empiricalobservations to subjects of current law reform as varied ascohabitation, custody, grandparent visitation, payment for householdwork and domestic violence. Relevant norms and what is called socialcapital affect family members’ relationships with each other, that is,within the family community. They also govern the way outsidecommunities interact with families, and social capital built within thefamily influences commercial and public relationships that do notdirectly involve families at all. Law reform, even from the best ofintentions, often misfires because norms and the impact of socialcapital are not considered.
