NYC Elder Abuse Center Blog Post On Social Engagement

A recent post on the NYC Elder Abuse Center blog  focused on the role of social isolation as an elder abuse risk factor and how “social integration” serves as an effective prevention step.  The blog discusses the causes of increasing isolation and offers practical tips for social integration from guest blog author, Dr. Janet Wolfe (Dr. Wolf is the Director of the Albert Ellis Institute in NYC).  Her tips are discussed in the blog and also available in a pdf here.  The tips discuss location, conversation techniques, sharing and keeping connected.

The blog also has links to other sources and programs funded through NYC Department on Aging. As well, the blog mentions of the role of technology to stay connected.  The Senior Planet (its tag line is “Aging With Attitude”) “celebrates aging by sharing information and resources that support aging with attitude, with a particular focus on technology’s role in helping adults 60 and up connect, stay health and enjoy life.”

Part of the Senior Planet is The Senior Planet Exploration Center  (this is “the first technology-themed center for people 60 and up”). The Center offers courses, presentations, workshops and events and has “Teksperts” available as well as new tech gadgets.  I so want to visit this Center!
