AARP Employment Fact Sheet for November

AARP’s Public Policy Institute has published Fact Sheet #297 for November, 2013 on older workers. Sara Rix wrote the fact sheet, The Employment Situation, November 2013 Looking Up at Last a pdf of which is available here. According to her article about the fact sheet,

  • The November unemployment rate for the workforce aged 55 and older— 4.9 percent—was down sharply from October’s 5.4 percent….
  • Approximately 1.6 million people aged 55 and older were unemployed in November, 188,000 fewer than in October and nearly 300,000 fewer than the previous November.
  • The average duration of unemployment for older jobseekers rose slightly to 50.7 weeks from 49.7 weeks between October and November.

The fact sheet contains some interesting charts and graphs, and concludes with the following observations:

The employment picture appeared brighter for workers of all ages in November …. More Americans had jobs, and the unemployment rate was lower than it had been since 2008. The situation improved for older workers as well, fewer of whom were unemployed, employed part-time for economic reasons, or discouraged about their job prospects….
