Jenny Hatch Justice Project

You may recall reading the story of Jenny Hatch, who fought a plenary guardianship starting back in 2012. “After a year of litigation and six days of trial, Jenny Hatch won the right to make decisions for herself, using Supported Decision-Making: to direct her life to the maximum of her abilities and choose where to live, what to do and who to see.”    More information about the trial, including the petition, order, testimony excerpts and more can be accessed here.

As a result of this case, the Jenny Hatch Justice Project was created by Quality Trust for Individuals with Disabilities.  The project “is an integrated, multi-faceted resource and outreach center dedicated to advancing people with disabilities’ right to make their own choices and determine their own path and direction in life.” The website includes a number of resources as well as articles about the case. I first learned about the JHJ project through an October 25, 2013 article by Michelle Diament, called Center to Promote Alternatives to Guardianship which was published in Disability Scoop. (I picked up this article from a tweet of Patti Dudek. Rock on Patti!)
