Aging in Place

In the past few months, for various reasons, I’ve been hearing the phrase, “aging in place” frequently. I don’t know about the rest of you, but as elder law profs, this isn’t a new concept to us, although maybe the phrasing is a little different. In fact I bet if you look at the first edition of the elder law casesbooks, you will find a section on it.

We all know that elders want to remain in their homes and be as independent as possible, maintaining autonomy, dignity, etc.  Some professions have already recognized the desire of folks to stay at home, and we have send trends, such as “universal design”, Naturally Occurring Retirement Communities” (NORCs), etc.    PBS, as part of PBS Newshour, ran a report on August 8th, 2013 on aging in place. Titled “There’s No Place Like Home,”  the story discussed the creation of Beacon Hill Village.  The link to the story offers the transcript, or a link to listen to the story.
