Ireland: study says most community nurses don’t report elder abuse

Many community nurses don’t intervene in cases of elderly abuse according to a new study.  Themajority of nurses say they have witnessed this type of abuse at leasttwice but considered intervention to be beyond their authority.  Ministerfor Older People Máire Hoctor is launching a DVD today informing nurseson how best to deal with cases of elderly abuse.  Talking ahead ofits release Head of Midwifery and Health Systems at UCD Amanda Phelansaid many elderly people are afraid to come forward to report the abuse.
