Smoking ban annoys seniors

There is little sympathy from Premier Dalton McGuinty for Ontariosmokers forced out into the cold from their long-term care and nursinghomes.  One senior has already died after taking a smoking break outside hislong-term care home on Manitoulin Island in below-freezingtemperatures. The tobacco-industry sponsored group MyChoice.ca saysmany seniors have been forced outside in dangerous, icy conditionssince the provincewide smoking ban became law last June.  McGuinty says he understands that some long-term care facilitiesdon’t have the money to build specially ventilated rooms for smokers.  He says the government had to make some tough choices with itssmoking ban, and one of those was to protect workers at nursing homesfrom second-hand smoke.  Health Minister George Smitherman says the smoking ban also protectsthe vast majority of seniors living in care who do not smoke.
