Canada: Sudbury Awaits Solution to Long Term Care Crisis
A made-in-Sudbury planto solve the long-term care crisis in this area was submitted to theprovince over a month ago, but Sudbury Mayor Dave Courtemanche is stillwaiting for the government to make a move.Inearly December, Courtemanche, Sudbury MPP Rick Bartolucci, Ward 2Councillor Ron Bradley and city staffer Catherine Matheson met withHealth and Long-Term Care Minister George Smitherman to seek a solutionto the ongoing nursing care bed shortage.Smithermansuggested community partners in Sudbury come up with a solution, and aproposal was submitted to his office about a week later.Courtemanche’sadvisor, Paul Demers, said the Mayor spoke on the phone with SmithermanThursday morning about the subject, but couldn’t divulge the content oftheir discussion.Demers also said he couldnot discuss the content of the made-in-Sudbury solution. The Mayor isanxiously waiting for Smitherman to make an announcement about thistopic, he said.“It’s a concern to ourcommunity, and Bartolucci and the Mayor have been working together onthis, and they’ve been keeping themselves up to speed on thesituation,” said Demers.“It’s something that the mayor strongly feels needs to be accomplished.”
