AARP: Abandoning Social Security Overhaul?
Via the AARP Blog:
Representative Clay Shaw, a Florida Republican who sits on the House Ways and Means Committee, was quoted in a Bloombergnews story as saying he doesn’t think there will be a bill in Congressregarding Social Security solvency in either 2005 or 2006.
Meanwhile, the Wall Street Journalis reporting a public opinion poll shows support for overhauling SocialSecurity and for the war in Iraq has diminished as the nation’sattention gets focused “inward” especially to the task of the hugelyexpensive recovery after Hurricane Katrina.
AARP continues to stress the need for making Social Security strong and solvent. Surveys taken at the 50th, 60th, and 70th anniversariesof Social Security show a high regard that the American public has forSocial Security as an important American institution, not only forAmerica’s retired citizens, but for the entire American adultpopulation.
