Long life and quality care for the aging…in Cuba

Pan American Health Organization (PAHO)Regional Advisor for Aging and Health, Martha Pelaez, praised the Cubanmodel of assistance to the elderly, calling it an example to theAmericas.

She said Cubans have free and universal accessibility tohealth services, which has contributed to achievements in the Island ofa life expectancy over 77 years.

There are more than 48 million people over 60 currentlyliving in the region, which is expected to rise to 100 million by 2025.Thus, we should learn to grow older with good health, said Pelaez.

Cuba, Barbados, Puerto Rico, and Argentina are among thenations with the greatest longevity, added the official, who isparticipating in the 3rd International Congress entitled SatisfactoryLongevity: Integral Vision, in session in this capital until Saturday.

The Congress, sponsored by the Caribbean MedicalAssociation, gathers over a hundred participants from ten countriesinterested in human longevity and improvement in the quality of life.
